Tips From Kali

Game Launch Options in Kali95 1.1 --------------------------------- There are now two different ways to play most games on Kali95. The traditional way involves connecting to a Kali server and using the game icons at the bottom of the screen. The new way involves using the Launch button and associated game list to host or launch a game lobby for a specific game. See http://www.kali.net/betakali.html for the latest Kali95 1.1 release. The Traditional Kali Game ------------------------- This method is the only method available to older Kali95 users, DOS, OS/2, and Mac users. Basically all players connect to the same Kali server first. You can chat before starting games with everyone else running chat on that server. Once connected to the same server as the other players you simply launch the game from an icon on the bottom of the screen. If no icon is setup yet either manually configure one of the buttons or select the Scan for Games option in the Games menu. Once the game is started select the options in the game to either host or join an IPX game. Just follow the game's own directions as if you were playing on a local area network. Almost any DOS or Win95 IPX game can be played this way. Servers: The biggest trick playing the traditional way is finding the right server. If you join a server that is empty or doesn't have people playing your game you won't have any luck getting a game started. There is a list of servers that appear when Kali95 first starts. You will see about 12 servers that begin with "->" like "-> Descent <-". These are servers run by Kali, Inc. that specialize in certain games. These are always a good choice. There are also servers that specialize in certain geographical areas. Just browse the list...there are over 400 servers. Process: When on a server and in the chat mode type "/games" to see the list of "processes" that each user on that server is running. Some will appear as games. By typing "/process all" you will see a list of every process (game) running on Kali and the number of people running each. Typing "/process descent" will show all of the servers that have people running Descent. These commands might make it easier to find out where most of the people playing your game are hanging out. The New Game Lobby ------------------ Kali95 1.1 introduced a new game lobby system. This system makes it much easier to find other players for specific games and allows users to control who can join a game. For games like Duke Nukem and Doom it also allows users to setup all of the game options before launching thus eliminating most of the problems getting those games started. You can manually configure games for the new Lobby interface by selecting "Edit Launch Game Info" from the Games menu or right-clicking the Launch button at the bottom of the screen. You can also select the option to "Scan for Games" from the Games menu to have Kali automatically find and configure all of your games (highly recommended). You must have the game configured before you can either host or join one of these games. To use this system you do not have to be on a server, but you may be on a server if you want. You do not have to be on the same server as the other players. Everyone sees the same list of games. To host a game (only a registered user can host a game) click the Launch button on the left side of the game icon toolbar. Select the type of game from the "Game:" field and possibly set any of the other options. Click OK and then wait for players to join. Once everyone joins click the small Launch button (looks like a space ship) on the toolbar and the game will start. To join one of these games just look through the list of games that appears below the list of servers when Kali starts. Select the game you want to join and double-click on it. Once you join press the "Ready to Start" box so the host can start the game. Whether hosting or joining once the game starts select the options in the game to host or join an IPX game. Some games like Duke Nukem and Doom will launch the game directly (no need to select the IPX game options). Summary ------- The traditional method of playing games is more flexible in that you can setup and run any game with any Kali user (no matter what version of Kali they use). The newer system has more features and will normally produce a smoother, more reliable game. Most games can be played either way, but don't get them mixed up. A game launched the traditional way will not appear in the list of game lobbies. Only games launched using the Launch button will appear. The traditional method is still the most popular way to play Warcraft2, Descent, Descent2, Command & Conquer, Red Alert, and Mech Warrior. The new system is typically used for Diablo, Duke Nukem, Doom, Quake, and most of the less popular games (because it makes it easier to find other players and games). ------------------ Notes on Kali performance... The performance of Kali is determined (almost) solely by the connection between players. The speed and location of the server has no affect except for one or two games (EF2000 and Top Gun). Kali routes all packets directly between the players so the server is only needed to tell each node where to send data. Even so, connecting to a server at your own ISP or closer to you might increase your possibility to find a fast game if other players use the same logic in choosing a server. People closer together will tend to end up on the same servers. The best way to improve game speed is to increase the connection speed for each player and bring players closer together. ISPs that run modems with DTE speeds of 115000 bps will run very well with Kali. ISPs that only run their modems at 38400 or 57600 will not see the same speeds. It's also essential for the ISP to have plenty of bandwidth available when you actually play the game. If you play games during peak hours your ISP might not have purchased a fast enough connectino to handle all of their users. In fact almost all ISPs have more customers than modems, have more modems than the have bandwidth available, and even the major internet backbones (MCI, and SpringNet) have sold more bandwidth to the ISPs than they have available. We're all fighting for bandwidth out there. The customer that oay more for better connections and the ISPs that pay more for better connections will win. Of course the same thing applies to the clients. Using a 16550 uart and running the connection at 115200 with a high quality modem makes a big difference. Faster PCs can make a difference since many of the games require a lot of CPU even without having to deal with packets for up to 7 other players. Users with slower PCs (486 or slower) will need to take steps to reduce the CPU usage. Removing music drivers from the games and reducing screen resolution or size will usually help quite a lot on those PCs. Memory is also important especially in Win95. Having 16 megs of RAM is highly recommended.

Tips From PODA

PODA's Tips For Internet Gaming --------------------------------- These are some of the techniques I have tried and read about, to increase play speed over the internet. It doesnt hurt to try them, you can always change it back, If it helps even a little.... --------------------------------- 1. Try to have at least a 28.8 connect speed. 2. Turn music off 3. If lag is really bad, you may want to turn of the sounds. :-( 4. Turn off shadows and tiling, under the Duke 3d options menu. 5. Shrink you screen down using the "minus" key. 6. Turn detail level to low. - this really stinks if you have to do this! 7. Try to connect with players with at MOST a 500 ping. Anything less than this is better. 8. With multiplayer, try to pick levels that aren't very big. ie. stadium. The bigger the level, the slower the play. Further down, I have included several smaller map levels for use over the Internet. For Kali 1.0: Everyone playing must have the same map file on there system. To select the map file: After you select network game, another menu comes up. Everyone must "select user level" and select the same map! For Kali 1.1: You can download maps from the host-WAY COOL 9. Try to pick a lower socket number, someone told me the lower the number the faster the game. 10. Turn Duke talk Off 11. Dont use the Number 8 Gun, - It causes seriuos LAG! --------------------------------- Some rules and other TIPS When joining a game over the internet. --------------------------------- 1. Once the game has loaded, and you are in the game, don't do anything (WAIT) for 30 seconds. For 3 or more players, you may have to wait 45 seconds for sync. This allows the systems to SYNC with each other. 2. If the game freezes, sometimes the MASTER can restart the game for everyone, or pick another level. 3. If the game starts to get jittery, if everone stops and waits, the game may re-SYNC allright. Or if the blue player presses the game pause button. 4. When waiting the 30 secs for SYNC, it seems that you can chat with one another. However, sometimes it seems best NOT to chat at all during the sync.
